The human’s life has advanced with “questions” since the beginning of creation and this issue is as old as the human himself. Hence, mankind has always had many questions in his mind. The initial questions were simple and on the other hand, human’s answer to these questions was based on the experienced humans’ memory. As the human made progress and knowledge was developed, mental memories weren’t able to answer plentiful and various questions in different topics of the science and also the mental knowledge was not recordable and therefore, it wasn’t transferable to the next generation.   Nowadays, the huge resources of human’s knowledge are recorded and recoverable in printed and electronic sets. We need a knowledge and service named the “reference service” and the “reference interview” to understand what question is answered in what science resource and how to understand the client’s question with the best method. The reference unit is a place for keeping these resources i.e. resources with generally alphabetic structure (like dictionaries, encyclopedias, thesaurus, etc) and also for providing reference services such as answering the reference questions. The central library and information center has dealt with gathering world reference sets and resources since foundation as when the reference unit of the library started to work in 1996, it had 1500 Persian and Latin books kept separately in two halls with 200 meters area. Before transferring the library to its new building in 2012, its stock was 7000 topics. After transferring the library to the new location and aggregating the libraries of the units in the central library, this library’s reference books were increased to 12000 topics. After weeding the old resources, it now (November 2014) has 12104 Persian and Latin books. Two rooms with the area of 740 square meters have been assigned to the reference unit in the new library which Persian and Latin resources are kept separately by two librarians in each of them.

The Journals unit of the central library and information center of university is considered as one of the dynamic and active units of the information center by keeping and providing services related to journals. Gathering modern and archive journals, this unit has managed to prepare an almost rich set as it supplies the researching needs of clients. In January 2013, the whole journals of 15 faculty libraries were transferred to this center. These resources are in different fields such as fundamental science, mathematics, humanities, theology, engineering, agriculture, natural resources, veterinary, physical education, etc. placed in a 824 square meters room. Number of printed Latin journals is about 270 topics, Arabic journals are 27 nos. and the amount of Persian journals is over than 800 journals. Accessing to the full text and abstract of more than 6000 Latin and Persian journals is possible via the information bases. This unit has two sections of current and archive journals. There are 824 Persian journals and 326 Latin journals in the current journals section and there are more than 13440 binding book versions of Persian journals and 60000 binding book versions of Latin journals in the archive journals section. Time coverage of these journals in Persian section is since 1951 and in Latin section is since 1930 up to now. .

 

   

 

 

 Activities

The central library and information center of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad tries to move in the vein of the perspective defined at the strategic program of the university which intends to be one of the two top comprehensive university of the country in generating science, idea-processing and developing technology, have a valid position among the 10 top universities of the Islam world and be among the world 500 superior universities with an Iranian-Islamic identity. In the same vein, the central library and information center’s mission is to reinforce education, research and researching activities of the university and supporting the university’s effort in enhancing the rank nationally and internationally via preparing, developing and facilitating access to scientific resources and information needed by the university and utilizing these resources..

 

The Apostolate and the Goal

The main goal of the central library is to help the qualitative level of education and research to get improved at the university via supplying necessary and enough print and electronic information resources and preparing a suitable environment for using these resources in the vein of education and research in shortest time and most useful condition possible.

Therefore, the following duties have been considered for the central library and information center:

 

•     Preparing and Gathering librarian material including print, non-print and electronic material and providing the service of availability of scientific information and resources needed by the university’s researchers
•     Managing the meetings of “The university’s scientific resources supply committee” on policy-making and targetful-being of preparing print and electronic resources
•       Carrying out technical services (cataloging, organizing and indexing) of all resources of Ferdowsi university of Mashhad’s libraries
•       Managing and monitoring the librarian comprehensive software under the university’s network
•       Guiding and teaching clients in recovering and using information resources and providing information and comprehensive services to all clients
•       Providing membership, borrowing and members’ checking out services
•       Holding courses and educational workshops of information literacy continuously for faculties and students of different levels.
•     Providing consultation services in the field of university’s libraries standardization in physical, utensil and equipment fields
•     Preparing content and updating the website of the central library
•     Utilizing modern methods of librarianship and informing and information advanced technologies in optimal use of human force, resources and facilities to propagate the information faster, increase access to it and supply services actively
•     Compiling policy and necessary bylaws relating to services and activities of the library and preparing long-term, mid-term and short-term programs
•     Gathering and analyzing the statistics of the library’s activity and providing the necessary reports
•     Preparing guidelines and brochures in order to informing professors and students about the library’s resources and services
•     Expert analysis of the status of faculties’ libraries
•     Training the library’s staff uninterruptedly to get updated and using modern knowledge of librarianship and information
•     Communicating with other information centers and carrying out inter-library borrowing within the country to remove the lack of resources
•    Trying for client tribute

Ferdowsi University of Mashhad is one of the most valid universities of Islamic Republic of Iran and scientific pole of North-East of the country with 65 years age and having 13 faculties, 38 research institutes, 5 research bases, 10 poles and 150 educational majors in PhD and master degree.

The central library and information center of Ferdowsi university of Mashhad started to work in early 1971 in a small building across from the literature and humanities faculty with limited facilities. One year later, it was moved to a 650-squared-meters building on South Shahid Motahari street. Then it moved to another building within the university’s campus. Regarding the local position of this library and being close to dormitories and some faculties and also clients’ participation, it was felt that more room needed. Although this issue was paid attention to in 1993 and the library’s area was first extended to 850 square meters and gradually to 2400 square meters, the central library and information center didn’t have the proper room required to provide the necessary services, yet. Regarding the approval of constructing the building of the central library and information center, this building was constructed in a land with over than 8900 square meters area in three stories in 2012. Afterward, based on the opinion of board of the directors, aggregation of some libraries and transferring resources to the new building were carried out.
